During World War I, commanding officer General Broulard orders his subordinate, General Mireau, to attack a German trench position. Though the assignment is foolhardy into the purpose of suicide, Mireau controls Colonel Dax, their weak, to plan the attack. When it leads to tragedy, General Mireau requires the court martial of three arbitrary soldiers in order to save face.
