The film is based on Sakyo Komatsu's best-selling science fiction novel "Japan Sinks," which was published in 1973. After the Tokyo Summer Olympics in 2020, the story chronicles the lives of four members of the Muto family, including the main daughter Ayumu and her younger brother Gou, as they navigate their way through life.
