Eddie Birdlace, an 18-year-old Marine Corps volunteer, is preparing to embark on a tour of duty in Viet Nam with three of his friends in the fall of 1963. Eddie, his comrades, and a number of other Marines organize a contest they term a "dogfight" for their final night in San Francisco.
