In 1943, during the invasion of Italy, one American battalion arrives, digs in, and then moves inland in an attempt to seize a fortified farmhouse as tension and losses increase. Unusually realistic depiction of war as a series of long, peaceful stretches disrupted by random, violent outbursts whose significance to the larger context is frequently unknown to the soldiers.
